New Jersey Industrial Arts Education Safety Guide.
Kobylarz, Joseph D.; Olender, Francis B.
This guide was developed to assist the teacher in planning, implementing, revising, or improving safety instruction in industrial arts classes in New Jersey, and has as its theme, "Safety Is Everyone's Responsibility." The guide is organized in seven major sections. The first section explains the purpose of the guide, outlines the contents of a vocational education safety program, and lists the objectives of an industrial arts safety education program. The second section allocates the responsibilities for industrial arts safety among educators, administrators, staff, parents, and students. Emergency procedures are the topic of the third section; first aid, substitute teachers, and school accident reporting are discussed. The fourth section spells out general industrial arts safety education policy, including teacher ethics, avoiding liability, avoiding negligence, use of school equipment, parent awareness, safety inspections, and safety education aids. The fifth section lists safety standards for facilities, color coding, signs, floor areas, floor materials, class size and shape, illumination, ventilation, material handling and storage, fire and electrical safety, laboratory maintenance, hearing and noise exposure, and personal protective equipment. In the sixth section, safety instruction techniques are suggested including rules for hand tools, power equipment, and specific laboratory safety rules. The final section consists of equipment instruction sheets and evaluations, illustrated with line drawings. A bibliography is included. A copy of all pertinent New Jersey safety legislation appears in the appendices, including copies of the accident reporting form, recommended facility capacities, industrial arts education safety test and school safety inspection checklist, and an end-of-year checkout checklist.
