Mathematical Education of Engineers.
Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, Paris (France).
The seminar reported in this document examined the university mathematics courses which should be available to future engineers, and was especially concerned with the introduction of computer science education. There are four major sections. The first reports a survey of electrical engineers in the United Kingdom which investigated how often they used mathematics in their work, and which topics were particularly relevant. The second section presents two core curricula, one for future research engineers and one covering the minimum essentials for all engineers. Examples illustrating the use of computers and statistical techniques are annexed. The third section deals with the needs of selected groups of engineers and includes details of programs given in France, Holland and the United States. The final section considers the computer education of engineers in more detail, and further examples of programs and specific applications are given. (MM)
