Road to Success: Service Learning Enhances Tech Ed Experience
Howell, Robert T.
Tech Directions, v67 n10 p14-16 May 2008
Service learning, a form of experiential learning, is not a new idea. Students learn through participation in thoughtfully organized service experiences that meet real community needs are are coordinated in collaboration with schools/faculty and community organizations. the service experiences are integrated into the students' academic curriculum, so faculty must be involved in planning and implementing service-learning programs. This article describes the author's experiences in the development of a "Power, Energy, and Transportation" service-learning program. A required class for all incoming industrial technology majors, "Power, Energy, and Transportation" students learn the basics of energy development, along with different types of energy and transportation services. The related service program involved sponsorship of the High Plains Rally, an event for high schools around Kansas and a few other states. During the semester, the author taught students how the electric cars involved in the High Plains Rally were made, why the race was held, how it was run, and how to inspect the vehicles. Following the race, students were required to write a reflection paper on their experiences at the race. The collaboration of all involved in this service-learning program resulted in improvement of both the High Plains Rallies and the "Power, Energy, and Transportation" classes.
