Energy Conservation in the San Diego Community College District: Initial Study.
San Diego Community Coll. District, CA. Research Office.
This four-part report presents the findings of a study conducted by the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) to assess methods of effecting savings in energy usage at college facilities, to determine curricular areas in which energy-related instruction could be increased, and to examine ways of saving energy through scheduling and transportation policies. Part I describes the energy sources and problems of SDCCD, outlines relevant energy legislation, and details the study's methodology, which involved: (l) an inventory of existing energy-related curricula; (2) interviews with faculty from a cross section of disciplines to determine the energy-related topics discussed in class; and (3) evaluations of the energy efficiency of district-owned facilities. Part II provides an outline of the courses offered in SDCCD's day, evening, and adult programs that provide energy-related instruction and presents recommendations based on the faculty survey for integrating energy-related topics into the remaining curricular areas. Part III summarizes gas and electricity costs incurred annually by SDCCD and examines, for each of its four physical plants, energy efficiency in terms of building design, lighting, and landscaping. The report concludes with recommendations for administrative policies to promote energy conservation, topics for further study, a bibliography of current energy-related works, and a proposal for class scheduling.
