The Effects of Types of Training Evaluation on Support of Training among Corporation Managers. Training and Development Research Center Project Number Twelve.
Kusy, Mitchell Edward, Jr.
A study compared various types of training evaluation methods to determine which method elicited the greatest management support of the training function among corporate managers. A case study approach was used to compare four training evaluation methods: reaction, learning, behavior, and results. The study population consisted of 90 part-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) students from 4 classes at the College of St. Thomas (Minnesota) and 75 nontraining managers within a national organization, Group Health, Inc., headquartered in Minneapolis/St. Paul. A training evaluation methods survey was used to assess the level of management support of training for each of the four evaluation methods. A statistical analysis of the data on both samples revealed that the results evaluation format received the most support, with progressively less support for the behavior, learning, and reaction evaluations. No significant differences were found between the MBA and manager groups. (Appendixes to this report include the survey instrument, copies of cover letters of the survey instruments, scripts describing instructions to study participants, a list of participants in the validity procedure, and scatterplots of the interaction between evaluation type and demographic data).
