Making the Connection: Disarmament, Development and Economic Conversion. A Reader.
Gold, Howard, Ed.
This document consists of articles which have been selected to provide insight into different aspects of the relationship between the two most pressing and challenging issues of the current time. The first is the need to achieve a just level of economic development for two-thirds of the world's population that live in poverty. The second is the economic, social, and moral imperative to achieve global disarmament. The attempt in selecting the articles was not to provide a new or original conceptualization of disarmament and development. Rather, the attempt is to present a broad range of the more provocative ideas that have been advanced to date, highlighting the main sources of current information and identifying those organizations whose work and research are providing a strong base for further work on crucial issues. The papers are organized under these headings: introduction (part of the Brandt Commission report which describes the crippling effects that arms spending has on economic development); military spending and its socio-economic consequences; arms trade and production; the military economy and conversion to civilian production; plant closings and conversion; and conclusion (which examines economic conversion and offers suggestions to the questions left open by the Brandt Commission's introduction).
