Sneed, Joel R.; Whitbourne, Susan Krauss
International Journal of Aging and Human Development, v52 n4 p311-21 2001
Surveys older adults (N=242) to determine the relationship between self esteem and identity processing styles of identity assimilation, accommodation, and a balance between consistency seeking and identity change. Identity assimilation and balance predicted increases in self esteem; identity accommodation predicted decreases. No interaction effects were observed. Results suggest identity assimilation effect may be specific to physical and cognitive functioning. (JDM)
