In 2013, as new high school equivalency exams were being developed and implemented across the nation and states were deciding which test was best for their population, Washington state identified the need to adopt the most rigorous test so that preparation to take it would equip students with the skills to be able to move directly from adult education programming into college-level classes and higher skilled employment. Washington also identified an even greater need for a rigorous alternative to a high school equivalency exam. As a result, college and career pathways are being implemented across the system to provide a seamless and accelerated guided pathway to success. This article describes one such effort, High School 21+, developed to provide adults with a new way to get a second chance at earning a Washington state high school diploma. As one of three briefs in this issue's "Forum: Responding to Changes in High School Equivalency Testing," this article offers a snapshot of Washington's response to providing instruction and assessment that reflect the latest surge in what it takes for adults to prosper.
