Health education school programs have a planned activity structure that focus on developing awareness on the need of keeping an adequate integral health, through the teaching and learning processes within an appropriate methodological context that promotes students full development. It is expected that school health teachers are effective leaders; therefore, they must have certain leadership attributes and characteristics that help them promote healthy behaviors and decrease risky behaviors among students and enable them to acquire aptitudes, beliefs, knowledge and appropriate health practices. Heath school teachers are educational leaders that have a strong impact on their students while at the same time stimulate and motivate the students to achieve their goals. The investigation question that guided this research study was: What type of leadership predominates in secondary level health education teachers of the Department of Education in Puerto Rico in the implementation of the school health program. The purpose of this research was to describe the leadership style that predominate among secondary level health teachers and determine which transformational leadership factors predominated in the group of teachers of the health program The conceptual approach on which this study was based was the Full Range Model of Leadership developed by Bass and Avolio (1994). The investigation had a quantitative approach with a descriptive design. The population of the study was planned to be composed of 135 subjects, but only 84 participated: 61 from Education Region A and 74 from Education Region B, which represented an answer rate of 62%. The data was gathered using the MLQ 5X Questionnaire-Short Version. The results of the investigation showed that the leadership style that predominated among the health education teachers that participated in the study was transformational leadership. The predominating transformational leadership factor was inspirational motivation. Last, the inspirational motivation factor was compared to a choice of demographic characteristics, where the mean was over 3.5 points, which means that the inspirational motivation factor was often present in the group [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
