This curriculum/lesson plan outline for the labor section of an economics program consists of three units. The objective stated for this labor section is to understand the role of labor and wages in the economy. Unit 1 on labor as one of the four factors of production covers the role of labor, wages and their determination, the effects of outside forces such as unions and government, and productivity. Unit 2 focuses on organized labor in the United States. Lessons address reasons for organizing, difficulties in early attempts to organize labor, the organization of national labor unions and the development of collective bargaining, the historical role of government in resisting and/or protecting the activities of organized labor, recent developments in organized labor, and labor history. Unit 3 on labor-management relations covers the goals of management and its methods and the goals of labor and its methods. Each lesson consists of information on content and resource suggestions for teacher use as well as a list of student activities. A list of 36 suggested readings is provided. Multimedia kits, records, and periodicals and newspapers are also listed. Appendixes include some suggested materials for use in the lessons. (YLB)
