The expository and creaive writing of Native American high school students enrolled in a summer program at Colorado College sponsored by TRIBES (Tribal Resource Institute in Business, Engineering, and Science) is featured in this document. Part 1 presents a simulation problem in energy and resource management followed by reports submitted by 28 students in response to the assignment. The assignment provides background information on a hypothetical case: the Tiger Indian Tribe--living on a large reservation in western Colorado and facing the problem of rising energy costs and high unemployment--is considering specific proposals to build either a hydroelectric or coal-fired electric generating plant. Seven special interest groups and their biases are described: tribal business leaders, Tiger Labor Organization, Save Our Environment Coalition, Tiger Consumer Association, Tiger Farm Association, Office of Engineering Analysis, and Colorado Ute Power Company. The student reports, each prepared by four students representing a special interest group, include an analysis of the feasibility of the power plant proposals, a specific proposal consistent with the group's own interests, and the use of economic analysis to support the group's position. Part 2 consists of 16 pieces of creative writing by students--most with Indian culture themes--in the form of poetry, short stories, and essays. (JHZ)
