Instituting the Arts
Uhrmacher, P. Bruce; Moroye, Christy M.
Clearing House: A Journal of Educational Strategies, Issues and Ideas, v81 n2 p53-57 Nov-Dec 2007
Education officials are emphasizing and placing resources in art education, but are schools ready to respond to this call? The authors discuss four approaches to the arts in education: discipline-based, interdisciplinary, utilitarian, and transformational art education. They do this by highlighting a successful arts education institute, the Aesthetic Education Institute of Colorado (AEIC), that helps educators meet their own ends in any of the aforementioned approaches to the arts. To that end, the authors offer a framework, the ecology of schools, for evaluating which approach might work best for a particular school's needs. The Institute encourages educators to awaken their artistic sensibilities and then to experiment with a variety of implementation ideas. (Contains 1 table and 1 note.)
