International Journal of School & Educational Psychology, v1 n2 p131-139 2013
Eating disorders, once thought to be exclusively a disorder of the more affluent Western countries, are now spreading around the world. Despite the wealth of information on the prevalence of eating disorders in developed countries, epidemiological data for South America is scarce. The 26-item Eating Attitude Test (EAT-26) was used to explore the prevalence of disordered eating attitudes and behaviors among Paraguayan adolescents. A total of 561 students in Grades 6 through 12 from three private schools in Asuncion, Paraguay participated in this study. Disordered eating (EAT = 20) was present in 91 (16.2%) adolescents. Significantly more females (25.0%) than males (8.2%) scored above the cutoff point on the EAT-26. Body mass index was found to be associated with abnormal eating attitudes, with overweight adolescents being significantly more at risk than underweight ones. Overall, this population demonstrated a high degree of dissatisfaction with body weight and a desire to be thin. These results suggested behaviors associated with eating disorders were prevalent among the Paraguayan adolescents in this survey population. Further research is needed to increase our knowledge of these disorders in non-Western cultures so school psychologists can design culturally sensitive prevention and intervention strategies.
