How can educators ensure that a good parenting program continues to be offered in the community year after year? A project in Wisconsin illustrates one way to create this sustained commitment and funding. This project has worked well, has been fairly easy and inexpensive, and has even led to new opportunities for parenting education. The project is a monthly, age-paced parenting newsletter, written by faculty at the state university and mailed to all parents who give birth at local hospitals. Each county Extension office directs its own project to disseminate the series, usually working in partnership with a maternity hospital and service clubs, most often Kiwanis Clubs. Partners meet regularly and periodically evaluate the project. Kiwanis Clubs like the project because it fits their major program emphasis on young children. Hospitals are supportive because it provides educational outreach to customers, in English and Spanish. Local partners enthusiastically re-commit to the project when they see the evaluation results and learn that their financial and volunteer investment has paid off. Evaluations have shown that the newsletters are effective. The project has also enhanced the credibility of the county Extension office locally, which has led to further collaborations with partners, more opportunities for parenting education, and invitations to join community development planning groups. Because Extension is publicly funded, it is important to note that local elected officials have commented on the programs' effectiveness and cost-efficiency.
