Cybertrips in Social Studies. Online Field Trips for All Ages.
Mandel, Scott
The Internet can take students on virtual field trips to anywhere earth, under the seas, out in space, or back in time. This book demonstrates how teachers can use the Internet to take students on field trips. Composed of two parts, part 1, "Preparing for the Trip," discusses the background of virtual field trips what they are, and why they are important. The chapters then take teachers through a step-by-step process to locate educational Web sites, and ways to integrate the material into existing curriculum. Part 2, "Taking the Virtual Field Trip," provides examples of actual virtual field trips that teachers can use, as provided, or adapt to the curriculum. The chapters cover major aspects of the social studies and history curriculum from kindergarten through high school: the community, U.S. history, world history, and the humanities. The topic areas for the individual trips come from the traditional curriculum areas, areas that standard courses cover (families and culture, the Declaration of Independence, and the French Revolution). Each field trip chapter includes suggestions and information on how to integrate the experience directly into the curriculum, how to adapt the material to suit each individual teacher, and how to change it to cover additional topic areas within the overall area of study. An appendix contains an introduction to the Internet; an overview of multiple intelligences; and a blank field trip template. (BT)
