Great emphasis and recognition has been given to the potential of lifelong learning in the new millennium and the vast body of research on eLearning in Higher Education. However, to-date little research has been undertaken to review eLearning in the workplace. The present study aims to fill this gap to some degree by conducting a comparative analysis of existing eLearning literature across both the workplace and higher education sectors. The analysis is presented in this paper as a precursor to providing guidelines for the successful design and implementation of eLearning systems for the purpose of lifelong learning in the workplace. According to the literature, it appears as though the development of eLearning across both environments has certain similarities. However, as a result of adopting different objectives towards learning, some differences were explicated in this study in relation to the successful implementation of eLearning in these environments. The latter constitutes the contribution of this study. This also implies that research foci must also differ for eLearning across these two environments in order to reflect such differences.
