Examining School Effects on Achievement: A Conceptual Model and an Example.

This paper describes an adaptation of Dyer's regression model that uses data on individual students in an attempt to isolate the influence of different schools on variations in student achievement growth. This procedure involves comparing the results of a multiple regression analysis of individual student achievement scores and several categorically coded background variables with the results of a similar regression that also included "school attended" as a categorical predictor variable. This procedure was used to analyze data for cohort samples of 1,308 sixth-grade students and 1,255 seventh-grade students from four middle schools in a medium-sized school district. Results of the analysis indicate a significant variation in the contribution of different schools to growth in student achievement. (Author/JG)
