The National Social Studies Projects: A Survey of Curriculum Implementation in Missouri and Kansas.
Dumas, Wayne; Guenther, John
In 1971 a study was conducted to determine the impact of 14 national social studies projects in high schools in Kansas and Missouri. Specifically, the study explored degree of teacher familiarity with the projects; extent to which teachers were using project materials; how the materials were being used; how teachers had been introduced to the materials; whether the materials were having a temporary or permanent impact; and the degree to which particular disciplines were being affected by the projects. The projects included the High School Geography Project, Harvard Social Studies Project (HSSP), High School Curriculum for Able Students, Anthropology Curriculum Study Project, Developmental Economic Education Program, Sociological Resources for the Social Studies, and Asian Studies Inquiry Program. Data were collected by questionnaire from two samples of 250 social studies teachers in Kansas and Missouri. Among the 20 major findings were that (1) teachers were most familiar with the HSSP; (2) least known projects were those not available through commercial publishers; (3) most frequently used materials were those of the HSSP; (4) most teachers learned of projects in college methods courses; (5) in all cases of project material use, 92% of the teachers anticipated continuing use; (6) projects had greatest impact in American history courses; and (7) projects had least impact in areas of anthropology and geography.
