This unit is designed to help first grade students understand the broad concept of community. The students experience a variety of in-class and field trip activities that will expose them to communities. The students observe and compare both natural and human-designed communities. Learning activities include pantomimes, listening activities, kinesthetic activities, and a variety of vocabulary and concept discussions and games. This set of documents includes an overview, objectives, and four sections of activities designed around the life and community of a wood duck. Appendices include the 4Mat model, an application of this unit to the 4Mat model, a cognitive pre/posttest, a student book, a glossary, a discussion of scheduling considerations, and parent permission form. The field trip guide covers practical matters, subject matter, instructional suggestions, and wrap-up activities for a bus trip to the Nature Center of Lee County, Florida. (CW)
