Five 45-minute teaching units for junior high school students on alcohol education and traffic safety are presented. Lesson I examines alcohol as a drug. Activities include a question-answer survey, a film, and a game. Assignments are a "find the word" game and an evaluation of an advertisement for an alcoholic beverage. Lesson II considers alcohol and behavior. Students identify comparative amounts of alcohol in commonly used beverages. Activities include a mini-lecture, interviewing people who do or do not drink, and completing a crossword puzzle. Lesson III explores the nature of beverage alcohol by examining the relationship between the oxidation rate and time. Students list risks and rewards connected with a decision to drink. Assignments are answering questions and listing places where a person could get help for problem drinking. Lesson IV considers drinking and driving behavior. Activities include role playing and group discussions of interviews. Students write a paragraph describing a drinking and/or driving situation in which they could become involved. Lesson V discusses dealing with drinking and driving situations. Activities are the same as for Lesson IV. Objectives, an overview of the content, materials needed, homework assignments, and instructional aids are provided for each unit. Appendices include a rationale for combining alcohol education and traffic safety, explanations of participatory teaching techniques, professional references, and test battery forms with instructions for administering, scoring, and analyzing results.
