This study examines drug use, including alcohol, as a factor in risky sexual behavior while considering patterns across sex and race. Both factors have been given insufficient attention in prior research. The data for this study come from a survey of 1,052 college students from a Midwestern state. Findings indicate that drug use is associated with increases in risky sexual behavior, but this is more true for females than for males. The use of drugs other than marijuana and alcohol has a different pattern of association for the four race-sex groups. There is no association between risky sex and other drug use for the young men, and a different pattern of association for the young women. For black females, other drug use is negatively or not at all associated with risky sex, whereas it is positively associated with risky sex for the white females.
