The guide presents information for parents, advocates, residential counselors, or retarded persons on the use of drugs in behavior modification. Reasons for concern over the use of drugs are noted, and general principles regarding such factors as individual differences in metabolism and reaction, dosage level, and changes over time are discussed. Answers are provided to 31 questions frequently asked by parents regarding reactions of retarded persons, other types of management of behavior problems which should be tried before drugs, changes in reactions during adolescence, time of administration, side effects, effects of anticonvulsants on behavior and learning, and vitamins. A final section in the monograph considers the importance of fostering better communication between parents and professionals. (CL)
