Guide to Children Affected by Parental Drug Abuse
Davies, Leah
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v75 n8 p62-64 Apr 2010
A conservative estimate is that one in six children in school today has a parent dependent on or addicted to alcohol or other drugs. This places these students at high risk for social and emotional problems, as well as for school failure, drug use, and delinquency. Schools, however, are a logical place to reach them. Identifying children of those who abuse drugs is difficult for educators. However, through careful observing and listening, school personnel can identify children who need assistance. Watching the ways children interact with peers, paying close attention to their drawings and stories, and being aware of some behavioral indicators can help educators in recognizing these students. This article offers suggestions on how to supply the support and encouragement these students badly need. It also provides ways on how a school counselor can help children affected by parental drug abuse.
