Testing, Testing, Testing
Coatney, Sharon
Teacher Librarian, v32 n5 p50 Jun 2005
Teacher-librarians and teachers said that testing is driving everything that they do. One elementary teacher said that her entire grade level had not been to the library all year because they did not have time because the testing is all consuming and dictating all they do in the classroom. The teacher-librarian at that school added there was nothing that could be done to change the situation. The Lance research studies in Colorado and numerous other states have validated the value of strong collaborative library programs to student achievement. Thus, creativity is the key, and so are leadership, collaboration, and planning. When teachers and teacher-librarians work together, they will find creative solutions to this problem. Indeed, it can be solved and it is being solved in many places. Teacher-librarians and teachers are working together to plan and implement creative lessons that incorporate inquiry, encourage lifelong reading, and teach the tested skills. Going to the library and encouraging reading and inquiry does not adversely affect test scores--it drives them up!
