This study was conducted to determine the attitudes toward intellectual freedom and censorship of Catholic Library Association (CLA) Midwest Unit members. Sixty of 77 members responded to a questionnaire based on principles from four American Library Association (ALA) documents on intellectual freedom: original and revised editions of "The Freedom to Read," the "Library Bill of Rights," and the "School Library Bill of Rights." A majority of respondents agreed with the principles: (1) to include in libraries materials on all sides of political, religious, and social controversial issues; and (2) that no material should be removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval. Half the respondents preferred the revised statement on censorship of obscene materials in "The Freedom to Read," while 35 per cent chose the original statement. Over two thirds used a special book selection policy. The study concluded that drafting a statement on intellectual freedom will be challenging to the Midwest CLA, and suggested consideration of developing a statement on the problem of violence in media and its effects on society.
