This book, intended for those in the early years of an academic career, presents papers on academic career development organized into two parts: Part 1 is on role expectations for beginning professors at eight institutions of higher education and part 2 describes career patterns by faculty members. Each of the two Parts begins with an editorial reflection. The papers in part 1 are: (1) "The Making of a Scholarly Career at a Major Research University" (Dean K. Kitterman); (8) "Building a Future at 'The Premiere Teaching University' in the Midwest" (Roy Weaver). Part 2 consists of 11 papers written by R. McLaran Sawyer, Keither W. Prichard, and Karl D. Hostetler. Most papers are followed by one or more additional opinion papers.
