This book, intended for those in the early years of an academic career, presents papers on academic career development organized into two parts: Part 1 is on role expectations for beginning professors at eight institutions of higher education and part 2 describes career patterns by faculty members. Each of the two Parts begins with an editorial reflection. The papers in part 1 are: (1) "The Making of a Scholarly Career at a Major Research University" (Dean K. Whitla); (2) "Teaching at a Small Liberal Arts College" (Anthony S. Abbott); (3) "Role Expectations for the New and Not So New Professors at Grambling State University (Lamore J.
