Common Representations of the Mentally Ill among College Students
Bovina, I. B.; Panov, M. S.
Russian Education and Society, v48 n8 p72-91 Aug 2006
The study of mental diseases and the mentally ill is, no doubt, the job of psychiatry and clinical psychology. However, social psychology has also made a substantial contribution to research in this field in the past few decades. In this study, the authors describe and analyze the content and structure of representations of the mentally ill among two groups of college students (psychologists, a group of professionals in the process of their development as future experts; and nonpsychologists, a group for whom knowledge about the mentally ill is not a component of their professional knowledge). They compare attitudes (social distance) toward the mentally ill in these two groups. They also analyze the sources of these groups' information about the mentally ill and the level of discussion of the themes related to mental diseases and the mentally ill.
