This manual presents information about the disease, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), and guidelines for service delivery to Montana residents who have been diagnosed with AIDS or related disorders. The first section describes the disease's causes, symptoms, and transmission; risk factors; high-risk populations; prevention suggestions; and diagnosis and treatment. Section II presents guidelines for health care workers and health care facilities, covering such areas as personnel management, hospitals, out-patient services, home health care, dentists and dental care personnel, and optometrists and ophthalmologists. The third section presents guidelines for personal service workers and facilities, including food service establishments, public accommodations, and swimming pools. Section IV considers guidelines for custodial institutions. Guidelines for schools and day care centers, covering such areas as school attendance guidelines, general precautions, personal contact, contact with blood or other body fluids, soiled items, and employees with AIDS are discussed in Section V. Section VI lists reporting requirements and guidelines for confidentiality and public relations. Section VII lists resources for further information, including addresses of five organizations with information on AIDS; and a bibliography. Among appendices are suggestions for blood and body fluid precautions; an AIDS Personnel Exposure Report Form; a guide to chemical agents for disinfection and sterilization; a form for reporting sexually transmitted diseases; and the Montana Code for confidentiality of health care information.
