Teaching Integrity
Saunders, Sue; Butts, Jennifer Lease
New Directions for Student Services, n135 p67-77 Fall 2011
Integrity is one of those essential yet highly ambiguous concepts. For the purpose of this chapter, integrity is defined as that combination of both attributes and actions that makes entities appear to be whole and ethical, as well as consistent. Like the concepts of leadership or wisdom or community or collaboration, integrity is a key element of effective practice in student affairs administration. Yet one cannot teach integrity simply by subdividing the concept into discrete components and communicating or debating the particular elements. Integrity is best learned through reflective practice in an environment that requires one to resolve complex problems with deliberate attention to their moral and ethical implications. This chapter examines the conceptual frameworks and strategies that can be used to teach graduate students and new professionals how, when, and where to lead with integrity.
