Focus on Student Retention: Promising Practices in Community Colleges
McClenney, Kay M.; Waiwaiole, Evelyn N.
Community College Journal, v75 n6 p36-41 Jun-Jul 2005
With increased interest in learning college initiatives, growing awareness of the need to promote higher levels of student success, and continuing emphasis on state accountability measures, many community colleges are seeing the need for a comprehensive evaluation of their retention and student success initiatives. Given continuing resource constraints, the challenge is to take a careful look at data about student persistence and success and then to discard ineffective practices and implement new strategies that will produce better results. This article discusses six strategies to promote student success: (1) student success courses; (2) learning communities; (3) effective advising; (4) collective responsibility and team building; (5) learning support; and (6) hiring the right people.
