A Life in Language Testing: An Interview with Charles Stansfield
Reed, Daniel J.; Bowles, Melissa
Language Assessment Quarterly, v5 n4 p336-359 2008
Dr. Charles W. Stansfield is widely recognized as one of the most important figures in contemporary language testing. He is respected and relied upon by leading language professionals in education, government agencies, academia, and the private sector. During his 40 years of working with languages, he has been a secondary school teacher of Spanish, a tenured professor of Spanish and teacher trainer at the University of Colorado, a test program administrator at Educational Testing Service, director of the ERIC Clearinghouse on Languages and Linguistics, director of the Division of Foreign Language Education and Testing at the Center for Applied Linguistics in Washington, DC, and president of his own testing company. He has developed and published tests of language skills in English as a second language and in 18 other languages. He is the author or editor of 14 books and research monographs, 66 research articles, 20 book reviews, and 11 test reviews published in professional journals. He has served on several editorial boards and is currently a member of the editorial boards of "Language Testing" and the "Journal of Second Language Writing." For the past 14 years, he has been president of Second Language Testing, Inc. (SLTI), a test translation and test development company that he founded in 1994. On January 26, April 9, and April 25, 2007, Stansfield spoke at length about his career in telephone conversations with Drs. Daniel J. Reed and Melissa Bowles, who are longtime SLTI associates of Stansfield and SLTI. This article presents an edited transcription of the interview. (Contains 5 footnotes.)
