The Training Directors' Forum Guide to Attending Conferences & Expos. How To Get Your Money's Worth.
Dixon, George
This brief booklet examines the issue of how to ensure that one gets the best possible return out of attending a human resources or human resources development and training conference. The first section discusses evaluating seminars, expos, and professional conferences and the rationale for attending. A four-year conference planning calendar lists offerings of human resource development (HRD) organizations. Next, suggestions are offered for evaluating the conference flyers, brochures, and catalogs the HR or HRD professional receives. These aspects of the brochure are discussed: clear descriptions, length, type of learning, limited or unlimited session attendance, repeat sessions, networking opportunities, expo visits, and guarantee policy. Next, the brochure addresses preparing oneself to attend a conference. A sample conference planning summary is provided. A section on tips on attending suggests building in participation, using the experts as personal consultants, note-taking and managing information, and networking. Tips are also offered for making the most of an expo. The final section discusses ways to reinforce what one learns at conferences. (YLB)
