Secondary School Graduate Follow-Up Program for the Deaf. Fifth Annual Report, 1984.
MacLeod-Gallinger, Janet
The Secondary School Follow-Up Program provides a picture of the postsecondary activities and attainments of graduates of secondary schools for the deaf. Also provided is an ongoing look at graduates' activities for those classes graduating in 1963, 1973, 1979, 1981, and 1983. A total of 616 respondents completed questionnaires. Results indicate that deaf secondary graduates are pursuing postsecondary education at increasing rates. The percentages of graduates earning degrees generally, and in technical areas relating to business and computer science specifically, continue to rise. Greater percentages are reporting jobs in the "Managerial and Professional Specialty" group of occupations. Still, male graduates continue to be employed most often as operatives, and the majority of females are employed within the "Technical, Sales and Administrative Support" category. College graduates continue to have labor market advantages over other workers generally, with higher salaries, lower unemployment, and higher labor force participation rates. Labor force participation rates were improved over the previous annual survey, though the earnings discrepancy between respondents and workers nationally widened. Most common ways to find jobs were direct application or an interview with an employer. Respondents expressed positive feelings overall about their jobs. The appendixes provide a list of schools and programs in which students have enrolled and/or earned degrees, as well as the questionnaire. (JDD)
