Navajo Biographies. Volume I.
Hoffman, Virginia
The life stories of eight Navajo ("Dine", their term for themselves) leaders are presented in volume one of this collection of biographies. Interspersed with portraits, drawings, and maps, the narrative chronologically covers the time period from 1766 when the Navajos lived on land under the rule of Spain into the twentieth century and dealings with the government of the U.S. (including the years at Bosque Redondo) and other Indian tribes. Biographical information was drawn from historical documents and Navajo oral history. Leaders were selected from a field of hundreds as representative of the quality of Navajo leadership from the late eighteenth century to the present. The volume contains a message to Navajo students stressing the importance of learning about their past as well as a bibliography and a pronunciation guide for Navajo and Spanish words used. The biographies are of Narbona, Antonio Cebolla Sandoval, Zarcillos Largos, Manuelito, Barboncito, Ganado Mucho, Jesus Arviso, and Henry Chee Dodge. (RS)
