Forgetting How to Read, or Just Re-Locating It?
Hardy, Lawrence
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v70 n6 p33-41 Feb 2005
A study conducted by the National Endowment for the Arts found that the percentage of American adults who read literature has declined rapidly over the past two decades, indicating an imminent cultural crisis. Digital revolution, which has had a tremendous impact on young people's reading habits, is considered as the major culprit of this decline in literary reading. Here, the author discusses the disagreement over whether this means children are reading less overall, or just reading fewer books and getting more information online. He also describes how rich is the literary experience in reading through digital media when compared with the traditional act of reading books while citing some of the advantages and disadvantages of creative reading and the Internet.
