This book addresses critical issues of digital preservation, providing guidelines for protecting resources from dealing with obsolescence, to responsibilities, methods of preservation, cost, and metadata formats. It also shows numerous national and international institutions that provide frameworks for digital libraries and archives. The first section of the book addresses theoretical aspects and includes two parts. Part I covers issues, including: why digital preservation is an issue; what electronic data should be preserved; who should be responsible for digital preservation; how electronic publications can be preserved; and how much it will cost. Part II examines models, formats, and standards, including: models for syntactic and semantic interoperability, e.g., metalanguages and metadata formats; and standards for structural interoperability, e.g., frameworks and wrapper technologies. The second section of the book describes selected electronic data archives, including electronic data archives in the United States and international digital cultural heritage centers, sites, and electronic data archives.
