Multiple Perspective: When Child Development Professionals Raise Twins
Stark, Deborah Roderick; Harden, Brenda Jones; Chazan-Cohen, Rachel; Cohen, Daniel J.; Rice, Kathleen Fitzgerald
Zero to Three, v26 n5 p15-22 May 2006
Do child development professionals have expectations about what it will be like to parent twins based on their professional experiences? Does their professional knowledge influence their approach to caregiving? And do their personal experiences as parents of twins change their research interests or how they work with children and families? To answer these questions, "Zero to Three" invited child development professionals who have had the experience of parenting twins to share their stories. Deborah Roderick Stark, whose expertise is in social policy, describes the challenges of responding to the multiple and often conflicting needs of two babies simultaneously, as well as the "double blessing" they bring to family life. For the recently adopted twin daughters of Brenda Jones Harden, a developmental psychologist with expertise in child welfare services, it is the blessing of having each other that has sustained her twins when other relationships have failed and will continue to do so as they heal from the past and forge new relationships in the future. Rachel Chazan-Cohen, a research psychologist, and her husband Daniel J. Cohen, share a number of insights, including the importance of sharing the care, as well as the joy of spending time with each child separately. Accepting and honoring the differences between her twin boys has been a poignant journey for Kathleen Fitzgerald Rice, an early childhood specialist at Boston Medical Center, whose twins were born extremely premature and one much sicker than the other. Her story touches at the heart of what it means to let go of control as a parent, rely on faith and the help of others, and treasure the unique and intimate bond that twins--even when so different--have with one another.
