An Analysis of the Experiences of a First-Year Tenure-Track Faculty Member
Hambright, W. Grant; Diamantes, Thomas
Education, v124 n3 p436 Spr 2004
The concept of tenure is an integral part of the employment relationship between institutions of higher education and individual faculty members (Mawdsley, 1999). Promotion and tenure decisions are often difficult and always have important long-term consequences for both the candidate and the institution (Rhoades-Catanach & Stout, 2000). Mentoring can be an important part of the promotion and tenure process and some academics who are not awarded tenure sometimes claim that they were insufficiently mentored (Fish, 2002). This article shares the story of one person's entry into the tenure-track and the results of being mentored.
