This booklet offers suggestions to those involved in planning school construction efforts, in order to help them better understand the process of designing and building such facilities, particularly with regard to the role of the architect. The text defines what good architecture is and what it should accomplish. It considers the services needed, pre-design considerations, pre-programming and budgeting, site selection, preliminary diagrams, preliminary cost estimates, schematic design and cost estimates, completing the design, contract documents, cost estimate revisions and review, construction bids, and construction. Specific guidelines are offered on a timeframe for design and construction. These include when to hire the architect, how to hire this person, the fee and the contract, what to expect, the design framework, and winding up. Throughout the process, it is important for administrators to remember that teachers and students are the clients and that education is the primary goal. Three appendixes offer a case study, information on how to become an architect, and a glossary of terms. (RJM)
