The Past, Present, and Future of Mexico: Democracy and Economic Sustainable Development. Curriculum Projects. Fulbright-Hays Summer Seminars Abroad Program, 2002 (Mexico).
Lutgen, William
Mexico has a rich and profound history that encompasses its pre-Hispanic indigenous roots through the period of Spanish colonialism, the struggle for independence, and the revolution. The intent of this curriculum project is to introduce secondary students, through the appeal of story, to the significant historical components/aspects that have shaped Mexico, and to heighten student awareness and appreciation of not only Mexico's history, but of the forces that have contributed to the richness and complexity of Mexico's past. Students read a collection of representative "historias" that are organized chronologically from Mexico's indigenous roots through the Spanish colonial period to provide the contextual and content parameters of more detailed language study. The project focus is on specific language arts and literacy goals. The culminating activity of the project offers an opportunity for students to write original "historias". The project identifies standards; cites objectives; lists materials/resources; and provides suggested lessons with activities/procedures. (BT)
