Replication: A "Model" Approach to the Healthy Development of Young Children
Krieg, Iris; Lewis, Jan
Zero to Three (J), v25 n5 p4-8 May 2005
The authors, directors of the Chicago-based Pritzker Early Childhood Foundation, advocate "replication," the adaptation of a successful model program or practice to new locations or to new populations. Studies have shown that successful replications of early childhood programs that help at-risk children and their families can have long-term, far-reaching benefits, such as lower crime rates and a higher college graduation rate. The authors offer detailed suggestions and checklists for lead agency and replication site responsibilities, challenges to success, and keys to success. For example, a lead agency must identify its core elements and provide ongoing training, while a replication site must secure funding past the start-up period. The authors argue that site success is largely dependent on the duration and quality of the interactions between the parent agency and the site, as well as on the competency and dedication of the replication site's staff. The parent organization must also have realistic expectations and be willing to change plans and strategies in response to insights gained from evaluations and feedback from the field. Successful replication is a win-win situation, in that a positive result has a trickle-down effect on all of an organization's replication sites. Furthermore, the agencies in the new locations do not have to reinvent the wheel.
