Designed to accommodate a semester course in Native American Literature for secondary students, this teacher's guide includes a general introduction, a statement of the philosophy and goals upon which it is predicated, a nine-week block on post-Columbian literature, a nine-week block on oral literature, separate appendices for each block, a bibliography, and a glossary. Block A, the post-Columbian literature, includes sections devoted to the following: biography and autobiography, historical narrative, short fiction, novel, essays, and contemporary poetry. Block B, oral literature, includes sections on creation myths; animal legends, trickster tales, and others; games; oral tradition and history; pageantry; oratory; music; and traditional poetry. Each section within each block (A or B) includes a plan of action, a list of activities, a resource list, and space for teacher comments and evaluation. The appendices are transcripts which coordinate with Block A and B, respectively (some examples of transcript titles are "Saturday Night in Standing Rock", "Laguna Genesis", "A Ute Skinwalker Story", and "Trickster Rabbit and the Stone Cliff").
