The Devaluation of Inner Subjective Experiences by the Counseling Profession: A Plea to Reclaim the Essence of the Profession
Hansen, James T.
Journal of Counseling & Development, v83 n4 p406 Fall 2005
In this article the author traces the history of inner subjective experiences (ISE) as a focus of the counseling profession and discusses the implications of this history for the identity of the profession and counseling practice. He outlines the history of ISE in the counseling profession by discussing (a) the valuing of ISE as the foundation of the counseling profession, (b) the devaluation of ISE in counseling, (c) the importance of revaluing ISE, and by (d) elaborating conclusions for the practice and profession of counseling. Moreover, he argues that the adoption of relational techniques as a standard of counselor training, increased trends toward medicalization, and the social constructionist movement have caused a devaluation of ISE. The value of ISE needs to be reclaimed, primarily to ensure effective treatment, but also to humanize medicalization and to supply the vital missing element of individual constructions to social constructionist theorizing.
