School-Based Interventions for Students with Depressive Disorders
Auger, Richard W.
Professional School Counseling, v8 n4 p344 Apr 2005
The professional literature regarding treatments for depressive disorders in children and adolescents, while often not directly applicable to school-based interventions, does provide some direction for the creation of guidelines for effective school-based interventions for depression. These guidelines follow, with linkages to the professional literature where possible. Embedded in these guidelines, where appropriate, are practical intervention strategies and examples that can assist school counselors in implementing the guidelines. Substantial numbers of children and adolescents suffer from depressive disorders, and these disorders bring with them an array of negative consequences. School counselors can assist students with depressive disorders by implementing individual and group interventions and consulting with teachers and other school staff to implement interventions in the classroom and the larger school environment. This article presents a set of guidelines and strategies to guide school counselors in their intervention efforts with depressed students.
