Profile of the Negro in American Dentistry.
Kidd, Foster, Ed.
The unique history of the Negro in the profession of dentistry is traced, and career information for the student interested in pursuing dentistry is presented. The book includes a profile of black pioneers in dentistry from the 18th century to contemporary practitioners who have made contributions to modern dental technology. A history of the evolution of the National Dental Association as the collective voice of black dentists and an account of the struggles of black dentists who participated in the predominantly white American Dental Association are presented. Other topical areas include: women in dentistry, dental auxiliaries, the black dentists and the military, black dentists and the community, and selection and appointment of black dentists to State Boards of Dental Examiners. Among the book's useful appendices are data which: survey the black employment in dental professions; list black dentists practicing in the United States from 1930-1970, including a geographical breakdown; offer a comprehensive guide to dental school admissions requirements; and detail scholarship and loan sources available. A bibliography is included. (SW)
