Games on Sustainable Development
Meadows, Dennis L.; Van der Waals, Barbara
This booklet contains a collection of educational games that can be used by teachers to convey ideas and create discussion related to environmental protection and sustainable development. The games accommodate participants of all ages and require little preparation by the teacher, up to 30-40 players with only one operator, minimal materials (many of which can be reproduced from the manual), and between 10 minutes and two hours to play. Short games can be used as warm-up exercises before the start of more elaborate games. The "Perestroika" game illustrates some of the obstacles involved in shifting to new and more efficient technologies. "Roger's Game" teaches the role of leadership and triggers discussion on the meaning of winning and losing. "Money in the Middle" is a negotiation game focusing on group problem solving to determine allocation of wealth. The "Freeway Planning" game is an exercise in coalition politics and the allocation of limited resources. The "Tragedy of the Commons Game" introduces students to the use and abuse of common resources. The "Trading Game" illustrates several factors governing the distribution of wealth among nations. "Impasse" helps a group analyze the social, economic, and environmental impact of a proposed project. (LZ)
