E-Learning: A Movement Coming of Age?
Reindl, Travis
College and University, v80 n4 p29-30 Spr 2005
Few phenomena in recent history have generated investment, debate, and analysis as online/e-learning. Whether by Internet, video network, or other means, online course and program delivery has been heralded--and dismissed--as a vehicle for revolutionizing teaching and learning in higher education. However, after about a decade of start-ups, re-starts, and false starts, one wonders the extent to which this technology-mediated postsecondary education has progressed in the United States. This article discusses the findings of recent studies by the: (1) National Postsecondary Education Cooperative; (2) Sloan Consortium; (3) Learning Alliance at the University of Pennsylvania; and (4) National Center for Academic Transformation. These studies paint a picture of online/e-learning not only as evolving toward maturity, but also one of growing pains and setbacks, from which issues that campus leaders and policymakers must not ignore emerges.
