The purpose of this descriptive study is to examine the factors that influenced parents in a school district in Delaware when they selected a high school for their child. This study also sought to examine the sources of information that parents used. Also examined was the impact of socio-economic status in the high school selection process. A survey was administered to a convenience sample of parents attending Choice Open Houses at high schools in a school district in Delaware in November, 2008. Telephone interviews were conducted at a later date with a group of volunteers who had completed the survey and indicated they were willing to talk further about the process of high school selection in their family. Survey data showed that the most important factors influencing the selection of a high school for parents were academic factors. Telephone interviews revealed the important role that safety factors played in the choice process. Safety issues were viewed as prerequisites for selecting schools by parents who were engaged in the school choice process. Survey data showed that official sources of information were rated by parents as being most important to them. Telephone interviews revealed the important role of informal sources of information. The interviews also revealed that parents view the school choice process as high stakes and stressful. The study found that parents with more education were more likely to participate in the school choice process. The study also found low participation rates by the following subgroups: participants in the Free and Reduced Price Meal Program, parents of special education students, and participants in the English Language Learner program.
