Promoting Learning. NIACE Lifelines in Adult Learning.
Malone, Kate
This document is intended to help adult educators in the United Kingdom promote learning. The guide presents practical advice, case studies, and tips for undertaking and implementing effective promotional work. Sections 1 through 11 discuss the following topics: recognizing the increasing need for lifelong learning; the rationale for campaigns promoting learning; getting started on a campaign; planning a campaign; identifying target audiences; consulting and involving learners; working with partners; planning promotional events; obtaining publicity; and obtaining sponsorship. The following are among the eight good practices that are listed in Section 12: (1) start by not promoting or marketing what you can't deliver; (2) ensure that good planning, including research or consultation to determine what is already being done, has taken place; (3) encourage partnership working between local people and other interested agencies to support, build, and plan collaborative, relevant activities; (4) relate to the wider social, cultural, and economic context in which target audiences are situated; (5) celebrate, signpost, and support learners into further opportunities according to their individual aims and objectives; and (6) highlight and support learners as promoters of learning. A glossary is included along with lists of 4 suggestions for further reading, 10 contacts and networks, and 11 World Wide Web sites. (MN)
