Teachers and the Political Process.
World Confederation of Organizations of the Teaching Profession, Morges (Switzerland).
Reported are responses to a questionnaire circulated by the World Confederation of Organizations of the Teaching Profession (WCOTP) to member organizations concerning teachers and the political process. Responses were prepared by twentyfour national teachers' organizations on questions grouped into three categories: the role of the teacher as an individual; the role of teachers' organizations, both national and international; and the position of the WCOTP. Category I, "Teachers as Individuals," solicited reactions on (1) the relationship between the part played by teachers in political life and their role in the school, (2) teachers' social responsibilities outside the school, (3) status of the teacher as citizen, (4) teaching of the facts of political life within the school, and (5) protection of the teacher in the fulfillment of citizen's rights and responsibilities. Category II, "The Role of Teachers' Organizations," sought information on (6) teachers and educational policy, (7) teachers and social policy in general, (8) balance between the majority view and benefits of unity, and (9) the link between syndical and political action. Category III, "The Position of the WCOTP," sought direction on (10) policy statements and their application, (11) definition of "political" issues, and (12) WCOTP support of its member organizations.
